Western Washington University Carver Gymnasium Renovation and Expansion

Department Chair, Physical Education, Health and Recreation, Western Washington University
Built in 1972, Carver Gymnasium serves as the academic center for PEHR as well as the home of the Department of Athletics. It required renovation, systems replacement and significant expansion to adequately accommodate these programs. In 2008, SportsPLAN Studio, with NAC Architecture, was engaged to assess the existing facilities, investigate and determine the needs of all the programs housed in the building and complete a detailed program and conceptual design for submittal to the State of Washington for funding approval.
Their program needs were significant and funding anticipated to be less than required. Through a series of interviews with faculty, staff, and group workshops, it was determined how to maximize space usage and stretch available funding. An improvement plan that provided significant improvement for all stakeholders was created.
Funding was received in 2011. SportsPLAN Studio, now working with LMN Architects, is proud to continue our work as the sports facility consultant providing program confirmation/modification, functional planning, and material/equipment specifications.
