McDaniel College Merritt Fitness Center

McDaniel College Merritt Fitness Center
The Leroy Merritt Fitness Center is the first phase of an overall expansion and renovation of McDaniel’s recreation and athletic complex.
"We are the college that changes lives and that means educating the whole person. Physical fitness is an important part of a well-lived life, and Leroy’s gift will help us build an irresistible facility that draws everyone in to exercise."
- Bob Warfield,
Alumnus and Trustee
McDaniel College

McDaniel College called upon Marshall Craft Architects and SportsPLAN Studio in the spring of 2004, to more accurately define program requirements and design concepts for new recreation, athletics and physical education facilities, conceived as an addition to the Gill Center.

The fitness center creates a new entrance to the Gill Center with a dramatic glass curtain wall providing stunning views of the athletic and intramural playing fields and to the Catoctin Mountains beyond.

In a series of campus workshops with the College athletics and facilities staff and student life administrators, SportsPLAN Studio developed a space program, concept alternatives and a list of fitness and strength equipment. We worked closely with Marshall Craft Architects to complete the design and the layout of fitness and strength training equipment on two levels.
