San Francisco State University Recreation and Wellness Center

Director Campus Recreation
The team of SportsPLAN Studio and WRNS was chosen for the San Francisco State Recreation and Wellness Center after successful collaboration on another Cal State facility at the California Maritime Academy, and several other projects since. This project was designed first on a steep hillside, but changed to a more prominent site along Lake Merced Boulevard. The redesign of the building also required modifications to the Gators’ softball field.
The Recreation Wellness Center is designed as a largely transparent building. Vast expanses of glass reveal indoor activities to the campus streets and walkways around it. Views at the jogging track level extend the entire length of the building over the gymnasium, MAC, lobby and natatorium. The team is seeking LEED platinum status, incorporating LED lighting, extensive daylighting and energy efficient displacement mechanical systems.
Our work began with a series of program validation workshops and analysis of locker room demand, laundry load calculations and use pattern analysis of the various activity spaces. SportsPLAN Studio assisted the AE team through all phases of design, and we have prepared details and specifications for all recreation and sports finishes, equipment and specialties.
