University of Akron Student Recreation and Wellness Center

University of Akron Student Recreation and Wellness Center
"The design of the Recreation and Wellness Center must be distinctive, but the building must recall and strengthen the character of the University of Akron campus."
"The building and its programs must be financially feasible, affordable, sustainable and provide outstanding service to the university. The building and its programs must be adaptable to the changing needs, interests and growth of the University and its community."
- University of Akron Project Planning Committee

A spectacular new Student Recreation and Wellness Center has opened in time for the Fall 2004 Semester. We worked with a diverse planning committee to assess needs for facilities and programming. Input from students and faculty was gathered in focus group discussions and a series of workshops.

Because Akron had no recreation staff throughout the design phases of the project, SportsPLAN Studio was asked to guide the space programming effort as an advocate for future professional staff and recreation programming.

For the recreation and wellness part of the project, we developed a detailed architectural program, staffing plans, proforma operating budgets and conceptual design alternatives. SportsPLAN Studio led the design of the field house, the 300-meter track and all of the other varsity athletic facilities as consultant to the team of Moody/Nolan and TC Architects of Akron.
