Princeton University Jadwin Gym Improvements

Coach Thompson needed a new resilient basketball court to replace the original maple in venerable old Jadwin Gym. He also needed comfortable new portable, telescoping seating platforms to accommodate Tiger Alumni and to increase the spectator capacity. It sounded easy enough, but the adjacent track surface would have to be raised to match the elevation of the 3-1/2 inch gym floor profile, and the rolling loads of the platforms could destroy a soft track.
Working as consultant to Sussna Architects, we evaluated a number of alternatives, then prescribed a design for a custom subfloor beneath the track to improve runner comfort and performance. We also helped the University devise a transport strategy for the platforms and designed new long jump/triple jump pits for a unique elevated slab condition.
